Review-Journal will be pink for cancer awareness
September 28, 2010 - 11:00 pm
The Las Vegas Review-Journal will publish a special pink newspaper on Thursday to bring attention to October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The paper will be printed on pink newsprint, and every news section will include stories about breast cancer. Reporters will examine the state of breast cancer care in Nevada, talk with survivors, look at mammograms and other detection measures, and highlight what businesses are doing to join in the fight.
The paper will have a guide to pink fashion products and a schedule of breast cancer events for the month.
It's estimated the disease will affect one in eight women during their lifetimes. The American Cancer Society estimated that more than 190,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,000 died from the disease last year. In 2009, it was estimated that 1,350 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in Nevada and 330 died from the disease.
Local celebrities such as Louie Anderson, George Wallace, Mayor Oscar Goodman, Clint Holmes and Kelly Clinton-Holmes, and UNLV basketball coaches Lon Kruger and Kathy Olivier will join breast cancer survivors, volunteers and newspaper staffers who are selling the special issues at selected retail locations throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
The Review-Journal will donate 100 percent of retail newspaper sales for the day to the Southern Nevada Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Dean White, director of marketing and promotions for the newspaper, said he expects that will amount to more than $20,000 for the day.
"We are so pleased that the Las Vegas Review-Journal has chosen to make such a statement to the community regarding their support of Susan G. Komen for the Cure," said Stephanie Kirby, executive director of the Southern Nevada Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
