Salazar announces $300 million in BLM funding

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said today his agency will spend more than $300 million on hundreds of Bureau of Land Management projects across the nation as part of an economic recovery plan to restore landscapes and wildlife habitat, and spur renewable energy development on public lands.

President Barack Obama "has said that our nation has a 'moral, environmental, economic and security imperative to address our dependence on foreign oil and tackle climate change in a serious, sustainable manner,'" Salazar said in remarks prepared for an announcement this morning at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

Many of these investments, he said, "including several here in Nevada, will lay the groundwork for our clean energy future by opening the new energy frontier and create new green jobs here in America."

Overall, the Interior Department will manage $3 billion in investments under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that Obama signed to stimulate the economy by creating or saving jobs.

BLM stimulus funding in Nevada will provide more than $26 million for more than 40 projects, including renewable energy, habitat restoration, roads, bridges and trails.
