Sanctuary operator in Arizona charged with mistreating animals
GOLDEN VALLEY, Ariz. -- A veterinarian euthanized a horse and a goat, and another goat died Wednesday, after authorities responded to a report of neglected livestock and other animals at an animal sanctuary in the northwest Arizona community of Golden Valley.
Mohave County sheriff's office spokeswoman Trish Carter said a menagerie of animals was gathered from the property because of poor living conditions, including an inadequate water and food supply.
Carter said the property owner, Jeanine Ann Cook, was arrested on a felony animal mistreatment charge. She was charged also with 60 misdemeanor offenses in connection with allowing animals to roam off her land in the 6100 block of Ida Drive.
Carter said Cook, who is 60 years old, took in abandoned animals and solicited donations for their care. She said Cook did not have a proper permit for Pleasant Farms, an animal sanctuary she was operating.
About 110 goats, a pot belly pig, an emu and four dogs were taken from the sanctuary and distributed to other agencies and individuals for proper care. Carter said additional charges are possible pending an investigation.
