Short list developing for temporary UNLV president

An acting or interim president for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas could be named next week.

Names that may be on the short list include John White, executive vice president and provost for UNLV, Carol Harter, executive director for UNLV’s Black Mountain Institute, and Don Snyder, executive dean for strategic development for the UNLV stadium project, according to higher education officials.

“This is a golden opportunity to select the right leader,” UNLV faculty Bryan Spangelo said Thursday during a UNLV Faculty Senate meeting with Dan Klaich, chancellor for the Nevada System of Higher Education and Kevin Page, chairman of the Board of Regents.

Klaich and Page will also be on campus today and on Wednesday to gather input from students, faculty and staff on what kind of leader they want.

“We are going to move quickly, but we are going to be deliberate as well,” Page said.

Klaich and Page said final recommendations for acting or interim president haven’t been made yet because they need to hear from the campus community first.

Klaich said White is a bright man and has the qualities needed and that Harter is a “proven leader.”

Klaich will make a recommendation in consultation with Page to the Board of Regents during a special meeting next Friday.

An acting president for the short term would not be eligible for the permanent position. An interim president, who would serve for one to three years, could be a candidate for the permanent job.
