Silva retains middleweight title

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Anderson Silva took a pounding for nearly five full rounds, but secured a triangle choke to submit Chael Sonnen and retain the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight title in the main event of UFC 117 at Oracle Arena tonight.

Sonnen put Silva on his back early in each round and was able to maintain top position for nearly the entire fight. Silva salvaged the victory by locking in a triangle choke and forcing Sonnen to tap at 3:10 of the fifth and final round.

Also, Jon Fitch likely secured a future welterweight title shot with a unanimous decision victory over Thiago Alves.

Junior dos Santos will get a heavyweight title shot after earning a unanimous decision over Las Vegan Roy Nelson.
