So much to see, so little time
April 17, 2009 - 9:00 pm
Welcome to the busiest entertainment weekend of Las Vegas so far this year. You can't do everything because some events butt up against each other. But here's how it shakes out, hour by hour. For extra details, read today's Neon section.
• 8 p.m. today: The Killers open the Hard Rock's new Joint concert hall. The new Joint is bigger, smells better and sounds way cleaner than the old Joint.
• 8 p.m. today: Robert Smith and the Cure perform their old-school, new wave tuneage ("Friday I'm In Love," "Just Like Heaven") at the Palm's The Pearl. Smith wouldn't give me an interview, which means he hates every one of you.
• 8 p.m. today: This is the last night you can see Mel B's and Kelly Monaco's new "Peep Show" at "preview" prices. It grand-opens this weekend; then ticket prices go up.
• 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday: If you have kids who keep you from living as an adult, then take them to the ponies, Ferris wheel and climbing wall of the Clark County Children's Festival at Winchester Cultural Center and Park.
• 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.: Free wine tasting -- free -- up near Summerlin at Marche Bacchus French Bistro and Wine Shop, which is still a local favorite. It sits on the fake lake of Desert Shores.
• 2 p.m. Saturday: Snoop Dogg smokes himself into Rehab for the big opening of the Hard Rock's day club pool.
• 2 p.m. Saturday: Lauren Conrad from "The Hills" takes her hills to the red carpet (actually a "blue carpet") at the MGM's day club pool, Wet Republic, for its official grand opening.
• 3:30 p.m. Saturday: Mandy Moore vamps into the opening of Tao Beach day club at The Venetian. There's a possibility a few others will show, specifically Karina Smirnoff from "Dancing With The Stars" and Krysten Ritter from "Confessions of a Shopaholic."
• 4 p.m. Sunday: Grown women slide into bathing suits to prance around in front of thousands of appreciative, earnest applauders when the Miss USA Pageant dolls itself up at Planet Hollywood. The tape-delayed show airs at 7 p.m. on NBC.
• 8 p.m. Sunday: Paul McCartney plays the Joint.
DISCOTHEQUE
If you go to a club this weekend, KC of KC and the Sunshine Band -- creator of "That's the Way (I Like It)" and "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty" -- would like to remind you that club music is still just contemporary disco.
"I don't think the beat or that type of stuff has changed much" from 1979 disco to 2009 dance music, he says.
"I had to laugh when they said, 'Disco is dead.' Yeah, the word 'disco' is dead. But disco is not dead. The clubs are more crowded than ever. There are more of them. And the music's still happening.
"Some of the biggest discotheques in the world" are in Vegas, he says, "if you want to call it a discotheque. Right? 'Let's go to the 'club!' "
KC and the Sunshine Band, however, are not playing a club. They are performing today through Sunday at the Orleans Showroom. Read the rest of my interview with KC in today's Neon section.
