Start your engines, and sip your Slurpees
May 11, 2010 - 2:40 pm
You will soon have a chance to sip a Slurpee with a team making a three-week cross-country drive from San Francisco to Indianapolis as part of the first-ever 7-Eleven Road Trip Rally. The team is making a pair of pit stops at local 7-Elevens on Wednesday. The scheduled stops include:
— Noon - 2:30 p.m. at 9755 W. Russell Road.
— 5-9 p.m. 7:30 - 9 p.m. at 4890 W. Tropicana Ave. This is a "challenge stop," which means the team of Mike McClendon and Natalia Fedner will compete in a fun yet-to-be-announced challenge, usually incorporating the food or beverages awaiting them.
These pit stops don't involve a team of jumpsuit-clad mechanics using air hammers to change tires in seconds, but they do involve filling the tanks of the participants. Instead of getting in and out as quickly as possible, the Red Team will stay for hours at each location. It's part of Dallas-based 7-Eleven Inc.'s promotion for the Indianapolis 500, set for May 30.
The Road Trip Rally began May 9 on opposite coasts in San Francisco and Miami. Driving hybrid cars wrapped to look like race cars, the teams should be easily recognizable on the highway. One red and one green, the cars sport graphics similar to those on the race car of 7-Eleven-sponsored Indy Racing League driver Tony Kanaan.
You can follow the teams’ progress with video webisodes most weekdays at (www.711RoadTrip.com) or at (www.blip.tv). You can also follow the teams on Twitter, @FollowDrew, @711RedTeam and @711GreenTeam.
