Summer activities, events fill Summerlin calendar

Thanks to a robust calendar of special events and activities and more amenities than any other community in Southern Nevada, Summerlin is a great place to spend your summer, according to Kevin Orrock, executive vice president of master-planned communities for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin.
The community is home to more than 150 miles of trails that provide a haven for cyclists, runners and walkers; more than 150 parks of all sizes; 24 playgrounds; 16 tennis courts; 15 baseball, softball and T-ball fields; 11 basketball courts; six soccer fields; three volleyball courts; three community swimming pools; a football field; and outdoor roller rink.
"If outdoor recreation is your thing, the master-planned community of Summerlin is a great place to live and play," Orrock said.
Located adjacent to Summerlin is Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, which is considered one of the country's top destinations for rock climbing, cycling and mountain biking. In fact, National Geographic Adventure named Las Vegas as the country's top city to live and play based on its proximity to world-class recreational venues like Red Rock Canyon.
"Because of Summerlin's elevated topography, the community is typically 5 to 10 degrees cooler than the Las Vegas Valley making outdoor recreation more comfortable for our active residents," said Orrock.
Summerlin also hosts dozens of activities and events during the summer months, including the largest Fourth of July parade in Las Vegas -- The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade. This year's parade features more than 60 entries including traditional floats, Macy's-style giant helium balloons, bands, performing groups and a variety of storybook characters.
The 17th annual parade will start at 9 a.m. on July 4 in The Trails village of Summerlin.
Other summer activities and events include dance recitals, productions and gallery exhibits at the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center, dozens of concerts at Red Rock Resort, community cooking classes at Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, guided hikes at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and more than 100 classes, summer camps, sports leagues and other activities coordinated exclusively for Summerlin residents by The Summerlin Council, the nonprofit arm of the Summerlin Community Association that oversees the social, recreational, educational and cultural programming of the community.
