Suspect in 21-month-old girl’s assault, death appears in court

The man accused of killing a toddler and leaving her body in a trash bin appeared briefly in a Las Vegas courtroom Tuesday morning, where he faced murder and sexual assault charges.

William Marshall, 37, who was extradited from Phoenix over the weekend, told Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Nancy Oesterle that he understood the charges against him.

He appeared in court wearing a navy blue jail uniform with his hands shackled.

Authorities said he sexually assaulted and killed 21-month-old Shia Travis in June.

Shia's body was found on June 10 in a trash bin at the La Mesa Apartments at 560 Vista Ave. near Swenson Street by two homeless men. Authorities dubbed her Baby Jane Vista Doe before her identity was known.

Marshall is being held without bail.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 12 for a bail hearing.
