Teen given two to six years in prison for killing friend

A 17-year-old who admitted accidentally stabbing his friend to death during a fight was sentenced to spend two to six years in prison Tuesday.

District Judge Valorie Vega sentenced Jeffrey Pawlicki to prison for killing 19-year-old Jared Thompson on June 29 in North Las Vegas.

"I didn't intend to hurt anyone," said Pawlicki Tuesday in District Court before he was sentenced.

Pawlicki pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

Authorities said Pawlicki and Thompson went to Cameron Blazzard's residence near Decatur Boulevard and Craig Road in June.

They got into a fight and Blazzard dropped a knife. Pawlicki grabbed the knife and then tried to stab Blazzard but killed Thompson instead, according to an arrest report. Pawlicki then fled the scene.

Edward Kane, Pawlicki's deputy public defender, asked Vega to sentence him to probation because he is so young and didn't mean to kill Thompson.

But Thompson's parents appealed to the judge for justice.

"The worst thing that could happen to a parent happened to me," said Dale Thompson, the victim's mother. "A piece of my heart is gone."
