They’re the hippest couple around
August 19, 2011 - 1:02 am
They're like the royal couple of hipsters -- Ben Gibbard (frontman for Death Cab for Cutie) and Zooey Deschanel (actress-singer).
They're even cuter and more hipster than you think. Last week for Gibbard's 35th birthday, she got him a cake featuring replicas of retro baseball jerseys of his beloved and bedraggled Seattle Mariners.
"It had little jerseys of all my favorite Mariners when I was a kid. It was pretty fantastic," Gibbard says. "It would have been great if I was 5 or 35."
He gushes that he's "married to the most amazing woman I've ever met."
"It's very inspiring to be married to a woman who works four times as hard as I do."
Death Cab performs Saturday at The Cosmopolitan pool.
Gibbard will be checking Twitter (@Gibstack) to see what fans want to hear and to gauge reactions after the concert.
"I by no means take requests by Twitter. But if I see a certain song that keeps coming up in every city," he says, "I'll say, 'Maybe we SHOULD play that song.' "
Deschanel persuaded Gibbard to go on Twitter, where he writes about things he loves and "the pathetic play of the Seattle Mariners."
Some jokers on Twitter pretend to be him, such as @ben_gibbard, who once posted the ludicrously funny "ben gibbard in the house yall."
The real Gibbard laughs about that.
"For a while, there were many fake mes. For a long time, I know there were many fake versions of my wife out there," he says.
"Maybe I should start following my alter ego. It's quite flattering."
He realized on his birthday he's more grateful than ever.
"I don't mean to sound cheesy, but," he says, "it was pretty amazing to look out and say, 'I'm 35 years old today, and these people are allowing me to do this. They paid their hard-earned money to see us play.'
"You really can't ask for more than that."
