Too tipsy? With this app, your phone will know

Attention New Year's Eve revelers! Here's one more reason not to get behind the wheel of a car after drinking too much — the Last Call app from Avvo.

Think of it as a virtual breath tester. No, you won't need to blow into your iPhone’s headphone jack, but you will need to log some information into the app. Start by entering your gender and weight, then log each drink consumed. There are preselected choices, so no typing is required.

Be sure to enter the proper size of the beverages consumed. The app logs the time you entered the drinks and keeps a running tab of your approximate blood alcohol level using a time-based algorithm.

Users will see a bar chart showing the increasing alcohol level of their blood. They also will see an icon asking: Intoxicated? Tapping here leads to links for find nearby taxi companies and attorneys who handle drunken-driving cases. You'll need to give approval for the app to detect your location using the phone's GPS system.

I found eight Las Vegas area attorneys linked from the app. To find a taxi, simply complete the search the app initiates.

A disclaimer on the app said it is for entertainment only.

The app’s creator, Avvo (www.avvo.com) builds doctor and lawyer directories and customer ratings systems of those professionals.

To avoid drunken driving, use a designated driver or stay put.
