Two facing charges no longer with North Las Vegas police

Two officers who were arrested for falsifying an arrest report in January are no longer with the North Las Vegas police department, the department announced Wednesday.

The departures of officers Mark Alan Miles and James F. Balelo came at the end of the department's internal affairs investigation.

Police wouldn't specify whether the officers were fired or resigned. Details of the internal investigation will not be released.

The two 27-year-old officers are suspected of misconduct during a December incident at the Cannery, on Craig Road near Interstate 15, involving a casino patron. North Las Vegas police launched a criminal investigation into whether the two falsified the patron's arrest report.

Casino surveillance camera footage showed their reports were not accurate, and they were arrested on gross misdemeanor charges of filing a false report by a public officer.

Miles also was arrested on a felony charge of oppression under color of office for slapping the patron repeatedly and slamming him to the ground face-first while handcuffed.

The two have a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 20 in Las Vegas Justice Court.
