Two men wanted in connection with killing caught in California

Authorities in California have caught two people wanted in connection with the killing of a woman and the wounding of her 12-year-old daughter.

Willie Darnell Mason, 27, and David James Burns, 19, were arrested in San Bernardino, Calif., by Las Vegas police detectives with the assistance of the FBI and the Inland Regional Apprehension Team.

Mason was extradited to Las Vegas on Sept. 13 and is currently being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center on charges of murder, burglary and robbery. Burns is awaiting extradition from California. He is facing the same charges, according to Las Vegas police.

The two men are suspected of killing 28-year-old Derecia Newman during a drug deal at her apartment on the 5600 block of Meikle Lane, near Christy Lane and Lake Mead Boulevard on Aug. 7. One of the men then continued into the home and shot her daughter, De'Vonia, in the stomach before taking drugs and a small amount of cash.

The suspected getaway driver, 38-year-old Monica Martinez, was arrested soon after the shooting. She is being held at the jail without bail on charges of murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.
