Week in Review: Reporters’ Notebook

In a tribute to outgoing board member Oscar Goodman, the Regional Transportation Commission on Thursday presented a spoof video of the "Godfather" where his colleagues debated in a dark room whether Goodman was truly the "happiest mayor in the universe."

Boulder City Mayor Roger Tobler was hesitant: "I don't know. He's never done anything for Boulder City."

In typical over-the-top Las Vegas fashion, a Frank Sinatra impersonator sang "My Way," tweaking the words to fit Goodman: "He did it his way."

Goodman was moved, as much as he can be.

"I'm humbled," Goodman said, briefly pausing. "Well, I'd try to be humbled, but I can't. I've tried to for 12 years to develop that admirable trait. Still haven't."

Be careful what you wish for. The workload for the Clark County School District got a little heavier after district officials told state lawmakers of 34 reports they must prepare for the Legislature.

"They decided to have us create a report on all the reports we do," district official Joyce Haldeman said.

"Give me your tourists, your drunks, your desperate gamblers yearning to win big ..."

Not exactly Lady Liberty's call to generations of American immigrants, but it might be appropriate given the U.S. Postal Service's embarrassing mix-up on its Statue of Liberty stamp.

Turns out the iconic face pictured on the stamp released in December is not the one that stands in New York Harbor but rather the one that stands outside New York-New York on the Strip.

No word on whether France will put Paris Las Vegas' faux Eiffel Tower on a stamp anytime soon.
