WEEK IN REVIEW: Reporters’ notebook

As Henderson City Manager Jacob Snow looked over the upcoming City Council agenda last week, one item gave him pause. It contained an address on Athol Avenue.

"Athol Avenue?" he said. "You gotta be careful how you say that."

Shortly before the UNLV-Air Force game, a reporter talking to die-hard UNLV fans was sympathizing about the team's record over the past decade or so. Looking for common ground, she said, "I'm a Florida Gators fan, and they're in a rebuilding year, too."

"Yeah," the Rebel fan said. "But for the Gators, a rebuilding year is not winning the national championship."

Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge Cedric Kerns seems to be impacting the defendants in his specialty Youth Offender drug court program.

The program's two dozen offenders, ages 18 to 24, are participating in The Red Rose Regatta, a charity dragon boat race. They've named their boat "Children of the Kerns."

We think the FBI might be trying to scam us.

Several Review-Journal reporters recently received an email from FBI Director Robert S. Mueller informing us that we have been "transacting" with "impostors and fraudsters" pretending to be Nigerian professors and bankers, someone named "Ben of FedEx," and even the Federal Bureau of Investigation!

As a result, he advises us not to communicate with anyone not referred to us by the FBI's "Fraud Monitory Unit." Then he helpfully explains the proper way for us to claim our $5.9 million payment.

We know what you're thinking. It sounds too good to be true, right?

Well, it does seem suspicious that the Princeton educated head of the FBI would write with such terrible grammar. And it seems a little weird that he wants us to deal only with "Lord Ruben of the ATM card center."

But we could really use 5.9 million bucks! And if it was a scam, there's no way the email would end the way it does: "Help stop cyber crime."
