WEEK IN REVIEW: Reporters’ notebook

It was one of the biggest high school basketball games in Nevada history, but the recent matchup between Bishop Gorman and Findlay Prep was lost on bar patrons in snowy Durango, Colo.

As the nationally televised game tipped off on the TV above the bar, two men sipped their beers and tried to figure out what they were watching. At first they thought it was a game between two colleges they had never heard of. They seemed genuinely surprised when someone explained that these were actually two marquee high school squads from Las Vegas.

"Bishop Gorman, huh?" one man said. "I guess those kids are the religious ones."

It may be just a swanky Cantonese restaurant, but don't tell that to the publicist for nightclub operator Angel Management Group.

A news release detailing Hakkasan Las Vegas, which is replacing Studio 54 at the MGM Grand, didn't hold back on the superlatives.

Angel Management and Hakkasan Ltd. are partners in the new nightlife venue, whose location was termed "the company's most momentous venue to date."

It gets better.

"The collaboration delivers an innovative concept ... to create an unimaginable experience that will revolutionize the Las Vegas market."

But wait, there's more.

In one sentence, adjectives used to describe the venue included "embodiment of sophistication, glamour, world-class cuisine, impeccable service, sexy and stylish environment."

Guess that sounds OK.
