Winter watering schedule goes into effect

No debates. No nasty attack ads. Just a simple reminder from the Southern Nevada Water Authority: It's time to change your watering clock.

The winter schedule began on Monday. From now through Feb. 28, drip and sprinkler irrigation are limited to one assigned day per week. Watering is prohibited on Sundays.

"Complying with the mandatory watering schedule is the simplest and most effective way homeowners and businesses can conserve water," said SNWA Conservation Manager Doug Bennett in a written statement.

Authority officials say watering once a week in winter is sufficient for most landscapes, but hand watering is permitted on off days to revive dry spots.

Local landscapes should be looking comparatively lush at the moment. The valley has received 4.12 inches of rain so far in 2010, which is one-third of an inch more than normal for this time of the year.

The valley's wholesale water supplier recommends watering in the mid-morning to avoid icing in the early morning or evening and afternoon winds that can keep sprinklers from hitting the grass.

Most customers can find out which watering group they are in at the authority's website, snwa.com, or by calling 258-SAVE. Henderson residents can find their watering group through the city's website, cityofhenderson.com/utility_services/.

The information also is printed on most water bills.
