YMCA of the Sierra closes after 100 years in Reno

A 100-year-old Reno-area YMCA has closed amid declining membership and increased competition from private fitness centers.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports the remaining Foster Drive facilities of the YMCA of the Sierra closed Dec. 30.

The adjacent E.L. Weigand Youth Center remains open. It's run by the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows.

Historian Guy Rocha says the YMCA opened in Reno in 1911 and moved near Reno High School in 1956.

It included a $1.7 million youth center built in 2003 with donations, including $1 million from Reno philanthropist Link Piazzo. The city now owns the site.
