Let’s stop asking Washington to take care of us

To the editor:
For the first time in my 70-plus years, I have a president who neither respects nor supports me. I am not a Democrat, I did not vote for him, I abhor unions, I receive no public assistance, I am not an illegal, I am not a radical environmentalist, I do not live in California and I'm white.
I have become irrelevant in my wonderful country -- and at my age a liability.
Not only does President Barack Obama not represent me, he is not supporting some of our states, Arizona, Louisiana and Nevada.
I want all governors to stand up and take back the sovereignty of their states. We grovel to the federal government just to get it to send us back some of our own money. We need to stand up, say no and not be beholden to federal dictates.
We need to be proud again and accept responsibility for our mistakes, our children and our foolish belief that government should solve all our problems.

Government good
To the editor:
Tuesday's election results speak volumes that the citizens of Nevada are ready for a change, for the better. Sen. Harry Reid received 75 percent of the vote and Rory Reid received 70 percent of the vote. This speaks volumes.
Once people know that Sen. Reid's GOP challenger, Sharron Angle, is for bringing back Prohibition, eliminating Social Security and Medicare and killing the Department of Education, the citizens of Nevada will speak up again.
Ms. Angle will try to run against government spending, but that will fail because the only government spending that has been done was to help the nation. We all know which party put us in this recession. And we need to remember that if the government programs and some spending wasn't in place (such as FDIC for banks) we wouldn't be in a recession, we would be in a depression.
Apparently, Republicans have forgotten that members of our government are elected to help our citizens and continue to make us the No. 1 nation in the world. We will not be a nation of only rich and poor.
Apparently they have forgotten that the working class and middle class buy your products, purchase stock, obtain credit at your banks, and rent the rooms at your hotels -- something that the rich do only occasionally.
I, for one, am glad to see Las Vegas making a change for the better.

We're confused
To the editor:
In regard to the president's recent visit to the Louisiana oil spill and his following speech:
In one sentence, President Barack Obama says, emphatically, that BP is wholly responsible for the huge oil leak off the Louisiana coast. In the next sentence, he states the U.S. government is in complete control.
Please explain which scenario is correct, as most citizens are confused, or if not, they should be.

Gibbons gone
To the editor:
I am not in favor of what Gov. Jim Gibbons did in office. I also would say that I voted for him the past election. However, the memory of voters is very short.
Gov. Gibbons ran on the platform that he would not increase taxes, and he kept his promise. In other words, he was not the typical politician who promised one thing and did something completely different.
And as a result of him keeping his word, we ousted him.

Lonely cross
To the editor:
I watched the annual PBS production that tearfully celebrated Memorial Day.
Principal sponsors of the evening that took place on the Washington Mall, within sight of the U.S. Capitol, were the U.S. Army and the National Park Service. Several powerful lawmakers, led by Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the House and third in line for the U.S. presidency, were in the audience.
None was objecting to viewing the tens of thousands of Christian crosses and Stars of David presented to both the Mall audience and TV viewers.
Would that one jurist in the right frame of mind allow one lonely cross on a remote hilltop in the Mojave Desert.

Fenced in
To the editor:
A recent Review-Journal Travel section article addressed the Great Wall of China. Isn't it ironic how a people whose products we constantly belittle as inferior -- even though we buy them -- managed to build this structure, while we are unable to build a border fence?

Born where?
To the editor:
How is it that the people who question Barack Obama's birthplace never say one word about the fact that John McCain was born in the Republic of Panama?
