Even though another scorching Las Vegas summer is almost over, it’s important to remember that the community’s mandatory summer watering restrictions remain in effect through Aug. 31.
- The summer restrictions prohibit spray irrigation between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
- Watering in the early morning or evening reduces the amount of water lost to evaporation.
- Watering during prohibited hours or allowing water to spray or flow off your property is considered water waste and may result in a costly fine.
- And remember, Sunday watering is always prohibited!
While the heat is still on, you may be tempted to increase the amount of water you apply to your landscape—but plants and trees don’t need as much water as you think. In fact, plants and trees on drip irrigation can remain vibrant with far less water than grass; four days a week in summer should be plenty.
Following these water-smart recommendations can keep your landscape healthy while reducing your water use and managing your water bill.
Meanwhile, you can enhance your water savings—and help manage your monthly bill—by investing in a smart irrigation controller, which automatically adjusts your watering according to the weather and offers the ease of setting it from your mobile device. To help defray the cost, the Southern Nevada Water Authority offers a smart-controller rebate of 50 percent off the purchase price up to $100.
