Las Vegas Trump supporters roll their eyes during Clinton’s speech

Noel Searles spent July 21 watching Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump accept his party’s nomination live. And this week, he was holding a “Make America Great Again” sign while he watched Hillary Clinton accept the Democratic nomination on TV.

“This is our campaign,” Searles said, as he pointed to the Trump sign while Clinton spoke.

Nevada Republicans held a watch party for Clinton’s speech in central Las Vegas Valley on Thursday, when a small, largely-female group gathered to watch Clinton accept the Democratic presidential nomination, the first time a major political party has nominated a woman for president.

There were eye rolls, disagreement with many of Clinton’s statements and “get out of jail free” koozies.

“I didn’t see any humility,” “phony,” “leave my guns alone” and “what is she smoking?” were among the reactions from the group of nine gathered in a Las Vegas living room for Clinton’s speech.

Clinton’s hairstyle and appearance earned a comment or two as well.

National security is one of the major issues why Searles aligns with Trump. He worked on immigration issues in the U.S. attorney’s office in Phoenix a little over a decade ago. There he saw people “getting slapped on the wrist, sent back over and they come right back,” he said.

“Ever since then it’s really bothered me and we haven’t done anything to really get that taken care of,” Searles said. “(Trump) is proposing that we do something about it, which is more than anyone else is proposing right now.”

Searles also contends that Clinton has a “pattern of not quite telling the truth.”

Kathryn Njus, an alternate delegate at the Republican National Convention, said what she’s watched of the Democratic National Convention this week hasn’t appeared to have the same energy level as what she saw in Cleveland, where people were “out of their seats.”

“If you can’t get energized by your national convention, it’s hard to take that energy back to your local community to get everyone energized to get out and vote,” Njus said.
