Fans thought a plane flew backwards over the French Open — VIDEO

Fans at the French Open were freaked out this week by the shadow of a plane that was flying backward.

One person posted a video of the bizarre sight first spotted in Paris during Serena Williams’ match against Sloane Stephens, asking “Can someone explain to me why the plane shadow is going backwards??? #FrenchOpen.”

We wish we can report it was the world’s first time machine, but the disappointing answer is that the mysterious shadow was the result of an advertising campaign by Fly Emirates. As sponsor of the French Open’s wire camera, the airline attached a model plane to it that automatically moves back and forth to capture the action, inadvertently casting a shadow on the clay court at Roland Garros.
