FISHING REPORT
August 18, 2011 - 12:59 am
■ LAKE MEAD -- Anglers are finding shad throughout the lake, but the action for striped bass has slowed. This might be because of the abundant food source. Stripers are boiling, so anglers are fishing for the top-water bite, though some boaters are finding success trolling with shad imitations. The shad have moved offshore, so anglers working from the bank are having a tough time finding stripers.
■ LAKE MOHAVE -- The Willow Beach National Fish Hatchery plants rainbow trout at Willow Beach each Friday. Salmon eggs, PowerBait and variety of spinners and lures will catch fish. The list of productive hardware includes Panther Martin, Mepp's, Rooster Tail, Super Duper and the Little Jake. Early morning and late afternoon generally are the most productive. For large stripers, work the river south of Willow Beach to Monkey Hole with trout imitations. Farther south, look for catfish and panfish in the shallow coves and bays. For whisker fish, go with stink baits, night crawlers, shrimp or hot dog chunks. Fish them on the bottom. Panfish will hit small lures, mealworms and little red worms.
■ LAUGHLIN -- Cut anchovies have been catching striped bass along Casino Row and south past Big Bend of the River State Park. Swim baits, crank baits and cut anchovies are catching fish. For smallies, work the rocky points and riprap shorelines.
■ URBAN PONDS -- Fishing has been slow in recent weeks, but action should improve following Tuesday's catfish plant. The Nevada Department of Wildlife is reminding anglers that there is a three-fish limit on fish taken from urban ponds. Due to planned construction activity, Lorenzi Park pond received no fish.
■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA -- Weedy conditions still are present at all reservoirs. The bass bite is ongoing, with the best fishing remaining in the early morning and evening. Anglers using night crawlers are catching trout near the dams and in deeper water.
■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR -- Early morning and evening still are optimum for the best success. Spinners and lures along with traditional baits like night crawlers, PowerBait and mini-marshmallows are all working well.
■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR -- Rainbow trout still are being found in the deep water along the dam. Power baits and a few night crawlers are the anglers' choice. Largemouth bass and crappie still are being caught, but action is beginning to slow.
