Fishing Report, Dec. 27
December 27, 2012 - 2:00 am
■ LAKE MEAD - The Vegas Wash Arm has produced the most results for striped bass anglers during the past week. Some anglers have been using bait caught in the back of the wash, while others have found success with lures. Most fish have come to those fishing shad or jigging lures at depths of 50 to 60 feet. The Overton Arm has been giving up striped bass as well, but shad are difficult to find.
■ LAKE MOHAVE - Fishing has been light out of Cottonwood Cove, but there are reports of anglers catching smallmouth bass nearing 3 pounds. At Willow Beach, anglers are keeping busy with rainbow trout. PowerBait in a variety of colors, spinners and lures are catching the fish. Two large stripers, weighing in at 26.6 and 21.3 pounds, were reeled in at mile marker 48. The fish hit on an AC Plug.
■ URBAN PONDS - Clear weather going into the weekend proves to be a good opportunity to get out and catch some trout. All ponds are fishing well following weekly fish plants by the Nevada Department of Wildlife. Commercially prepared bait and spinners have been catching the fish. Anglers at Sunset Park have been complaining that a pair of rather pesky pelicans has been trying to steal the fish right off their stringers.
■ KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA - Winter weather and freezing temperatures will make fishing a dicey proposition. Current road and ice conditions are unknown, but single-digit temperatures are sure to result in some further ice-up. Anglers are encouraged to use extreme caution.
■ EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR - Anglers have found ice along the edges, but that could change quickly as colder temperatures move in. Fishing has been good, but anglers should be prepared for very cold temperatures and winter weather conditions.
■ ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR - Anglers should expect to find changing ice conditions and cold temperatures. The reservoir was open last week, but that could change quickly. Fishing has been good for rainbow trout, but fishermen are encouraged to use extreme caution when it comes to ice.
