Florida football player arrested after allegedly firing gun at pregnant girlfriend

Florida redshirt freshman cornerback Deiondre Porter was arrested Wednesday on felony charges of allegedly firing a gun in the direction of his pregnant girlfriend.

Florida coach Jim McElwain said the redshirt freshman reserve and special teams player was suspended indefinitely after Porter was arrested on four felony charges, including domestic violence enhancements.

Porter, 19, is being held on a $160,000 bond in the Alachua County Jail in Gainesville, Fla. He also was charged with property damage of less than $200, a second-degree misdemeanor.

"He's no longer with the football team," McElwain said Wednesday on Southeastern Conference coaches call. "He's suspended indefinitely for obviously a choice. It's his choice not to be with us.

"I'm sure you'll read about it soon enough. It's one of those things that we don't obviously condone. Like I said, it was his choice."

According to a Gainesville police report, Porter became enraged and confronted his girlfriend of two years at 2:15 a.m. on Sept. 29 and accused her of being romantically involved with a teammate.

Police said Porter's girlfriend denied the relationship and Porter later pointed a gun at her head and demanded she tell him the truth. According to police, the woman is 10 weeks pregnant and that Porter was aware of the pregnancy.

According to the police report, Porter resumed his accusations several hours later and fired the gun in her direction. The bullet lodged in the wall where she was leaning.

"The victim stated that all of a sudden she saw the defendant raise his arm and fire the handgun in her direction. The victim said the bullet struck the wall where she was leaning. Shortly after, the defendant left the victim's residence," the police report stated.

Police said during a search of the victim's apartment, a bullet hole was found in the wall near the front door and a .45 caliber shell casing was also found under a chair in the living room.

The woman came forward on Monday, two weeks later, to report the incident.

"She said she was scared. She was dealing with a well-known UF football player, and she was honestly terrified to come to the police and report it," said officer Ben Tobias, a police spokesman.

Porter, who has not played the last two weeks, has registered two tackles in four games this season for the No. 8 Gators (6-0).
