Former UNLV track and field athlete Amanda Bingson won the hammer throw Saturday at the U.S. championships in Des Moines, Iowa, setting an American record in the process.
Bingson set the record on her second attempt, a throw of 245 feet, 9 inches. She then set a new mark — 248-5 — on her third throw. Bingson broke the record of 243-5 set by Jessica Cosby in 2012.
Another UNLV alum, Christine Spence, qualified for today’s finals of the 400-meter hurdles with a semifinals time of 55.57 seconds.
