Former Rebels get some D-League love

Roscoe Smith and Khem Birch elected to turn professional a year ago rather than return for their senior seasons at UNLV.

While neither player found his way to an NBA roster this season, both have earned their paychecks.

Smith was named the NBA D-League Rookie of the Year by RidiculousUpside.com, a site that covers the league.

He averaged 18.1 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Los Angeles D-Fenders to earn the recognition.

The site was effusive in its praise for Smith in bestowing the honor.

“His evident ability to stand out on a nightly basis, coupled with a dominating double-double average, has earned Smith RidiculousUpside.com’s Rookie of the Year honors for the 2014-15 NBA D-League season,’ the site wrote in announcing the award.

Birch, who averaged 11.2 points and 9.6 rebounds for the Sioux Falls Skyforce, finished was the runner-up.

He shot a D-League best 70 percent from the field this season.
