Freshman’s goal a stunner
February 25, 2009 - 10:00 pm
Green Valley freshman forward Londyn Lopez never imagined she would score a goal this postseason.
She wound up scoring in sudden-death overtime to give the Gators a 1-0 victory over Eldorado in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A Sunrise Region soccer tournament Tuesday at Bettye Wilson Park.
"It was just amazing," said Lopez, who scored unassisted seven minutes into OT. "I did a move on the first (defender) and I realized there was nobody there, so I kept going and I had a shot, and I took it."
The shot rebounded off goalkeeper Chynna Hartmann, and Lopez was there to tap the ball just inside the left post.
"That was just outstanding individual effort, in overtime with massive amounts of pressure," Green Valley coach Joel Parks said.
Midway through the second half, Lopez had a goal disallowed by an offside call.
Kylie Lowe had a two-save shutout for Green Valley (15-1-1), which faces Rancho in the semifinals at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Hartmann made nine saves for Eldorado (7-5-3), which also had a goal disallowed.
• Silverado 2, Las Vegas 1 -- Shelbi Spooner scored two goals to lead the Skyhawks (9-5-3) past the Wildcats (7-5-3).
Syrina Lopez and Taylor Richard assisted on Spooner's goals, which came in the 32nd and 42nd minutes and gave Silverado a 2-0 lead.
Silverado will play Coronado in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Wendy Martinez scored for Las Vegas.
