Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Feb. 8
February 7, 2014 - 8:48 pm
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
4 Yankee Rebel - Rare race in last where Rafael Bejarano was caught in deep stretch; usually he times his move just right.
2 Cinco de Mario - Ran down the hill once for a solid second; winless on turf, but facing no monsters in here.
Long Shot - 6 Fighting On
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
3 Little Curlin - Had trouble in mid-stretch before getting free too late; second start off a 3-month hiatus.
2 Party Time - FTS from the deep Bob Baffert barn; Mike Smith is riding more and more horses for the barn.
Long Shot - 4 Act
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds and up
1 She Digs Me - First time SoCal for this Southwest import; like him joining the Peter Miller barn.
6 Runaway Wildcat - Takes the weight off with 7-pound bugboy Van Dyke; also dropping in class, a double whammy to win.
Long Shot - 4 Big Wags
Race 4 - 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
3 Star Act - Deadly duo of Gary Stevens and Tom Proctor; disappointed in last, chance to improve tonight.
1 Nashoba’s Gold - FTS from the clever Carla Gaines; Joe Talamo will save all the ground, likely take back for one brush.
Long Shot - 2 Sweet as a Rose
Race 5 - 1 1/8th miles, $300,000 San Antonio, 4-year-olds and up
5 Game On Dude - Did everything right last year except for the Breeders’ Cup Classic; lays over this field at 1/5 odds.
3 Blueshiesnrainbows - Was best of a Jerry Hollendorfer uncoupled entry in the San Pasqual; up against a giant today.
Long Shot - 6 Blingo
Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
7 Beautiful Spirit - Sliding down the claiming ladder to this low class level; key vote comes from Rafael Bejarano to win.
1 Best by Far - Good mount for the bugboy to save ground, hug the rail, and grind late; no world beaters in here.
Long Shot - 5 Citizen Jane
Race 7 - 1 1/4 miles (turf), $200,000 San Marcos, 4-year-olds and up
6 Jeranimo - Exploded like a rocket ship in the stretch to win the San Gabriel; going farther today, must replicate that move.
13 Temeraine - Surprisingly makes his first start on Santa Anita sod; clearly has the class to handle these under Gary Stevens.
Long Shot - 1 Slim Shadey
Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles, $200,000 Robert B. Lewis, 3-year-olds
5 Cool Samurai - Has as much upside as any in this field; if I get 6/1 he’ll be on every ticket I have vertical and horizontal.
3 Midnight Hawk - Logical chalk has done nothing wrong so far; only knock was crawling home in the stretch of the Sham.
Long Shot - 7 Chitu
Race 9 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $35,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up
9 Trelawny - Blitzed to victory in last over a similar field; the $64K question is if he can repeat that race tonight.
10 Square Dancer - Love the connections of Peter Miller and Corey Nakatani; likely to take back and make one late brush.
Long Shot - 4 Swift Eagle
Best Bet - 5 Game On Dude (race 5)
Santa Anita Park Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/5/$32.20; Long Shots, 8/1/$12.00; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.00
