Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Jan. 9
January 8, 2014 - 9:53 pm
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 7 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
6 Congregationalist - I like a parking lot post in any elongated sprint; this guy adds blinkers on too.
2 Cinco de Mario - Logical chalk lost a dirty nose in last; all of these are camera shy at the wire.
Long Shot - 3 Turn On the Brites
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up
4 Magic Mark - Ran evenly in debut, but looked like a horse that wanted to go farther; will be closer to the pace today.
3 Brave Act - Any horse Rafael Bejarano rides has to have some chance; this one has been toiling on grass of late.
Long Shot - 2 Roman Tizzy
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $40,000, Claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds
2 Too Fast to Pass - Just claimed by the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; horses tend to improve first time out for him.
1 Ranulf - Bob Baffert cull ran lights out in last on the class drop; now bobbing back up for some air.
Long Shot - 4 Money Cannon
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds
4 Keeneland Kitten - Midwest invader joins the Vladimir Cerin barn; starts at the bottom here, but was not at the bottom there.
3 Rambling House - Logical chalk off a couple decent efforts; need not be much to win in a slowpoke field.
Long Shot - 6 Warren’s Sallyized
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
5 Euroclydon - Lost by an inch in last, now picks up Rafael Bejarano to ride; figures to be righter there with a trip.
6 Princes Genevieve - Got a test drive in debut, slow early, fast late; picks up Mike Smith for the absent Corey Nakatani.
Long Shot - 8 Papa’s Flashy Girl
Race 6 - 7 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
4 Jovita’s Tuffy - Taking a huge class drop to face these; red flag for most, Mike Mitchell is deadly with this manuever.
7 Warren’s Tyler S. - Sliding down the claiming ladder for this lower class; should appreciate the extra ground.
Long Shot - 2 As Good as Gold
Race 7 - 1 1/4 miles (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 4-year-olds and up
2 Monastic - Big rider switch from 10-pound bugboy to HOF Gary Stevens; he teams up with Tom Proctor for a lot of victories.
1 Power Foot - This one has been rank early in some starts; would like to see Edwin Maldonado ride him with more energy.
Long Shot - 5 Black Spirit
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
4 Circular Logic - Another Mike Mitchell class dropper; like that Martin Garcia takes the call.
7 Unique Suances - FTS in a race full of slowpokes; watch the tote board for clues, need not be much to compete.
Long Shot - 2 Secret Memo
Best Bet - 4 Jovita’s Tuffy (race 6)
Santa Anita Park Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$30.20; Long Shots, 9/1/$7.80; Best Bet, 1/1/$5.40
Santa Anita Park Totals - 146/51/$311.40; Long Shots, 74/8/$97.20; Best Bets, 9/5/$19.40
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #3 Downtown Hottie (7/2) in race 8 at Aqueduct. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total.
