Hunter disqualified after win at nationals

Michael Hunter of Las Vegas beat Lenroy Thompson in a quarterfinal match at the USA Boxing National Championships in Denver, then had the victory taken away by disqualification after a two-hour deliberation.

Hunter narrowly outpointed Thompson, of Lenexa, Kan., 8-7 in the 201-plus weight class, earning the winning point on a punch with two seconds left in the third and final round. But a protest was filed over how much gauze Hunter used to wrap his hands, and the grievance committee upheld the protest, disqualifying Hunter.

At 119 pounds, Las Vegan Jesus Magdaleno stopped Isaac Torres of Mission, Texas, at 1:32 of the third round.

In the junior division, Las Vegan Isaac Castaneda lost to Jose Ramirez of Avenal, Calif., 5-0 in the 125-pound class.

Younger Montana commits to Washington

Just like his dad, Nick Montana will wear a golden helmet in college. Unlike his famous father, he'll be doing it on the shores of Lake Washington and not under the watchful eye of Touchdown Jesus.

Nick Montana, the son of former Notre Dame and NFL great Joe Montana, gave an oral commitment to play his college ball at Washington. He will be a senior at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, Calif., this fall. He told his coach, Bill Redell, on Tuesday night of his decision to become a Husky after visiting the school last weekend.

"I've put probably seven, eight, nine guys in Division I programs, and he's one of the top guys I've ever had," Redell said by phone. "He'll do nothing but get better."

Montana is considered one of the top prep quarterbacks for the class of 2010, rated by Scout.com as the No. 13 quarterback prospect in the country. Last season as a junior, he led Oaks Christian to a 14-0 record, throwing for 33 touchdowns and more than 2,500 yards.

Also: Oklahoma state health officials confirmed that a stretch of the Oklahoma River was to blame for sickening at least 45 triathletes last month, saying the water was filled with parasites, viruses and other contaminants associated with animal and human waste.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health said tests on stool samples from the athletes confirmed such contaminants as norovirus and "a couple of different kinds of bacteria and parasites." The agency said the findings were consistent with waterborne human or animal waste.
