Judge: Gatti weigh-in faulty, but Gamache awarded nothing

The New York State Athletic Commission failed to properly weigh boxer Arturo Gatti before he fought Joey Gamache at Madison Square Garden in 2000, but that didn't cause Gamache's career-ending knockout loss, a judge said Thursday.

Evidence shows a commission official let Gatti off the scale before it could be reasonably determined if he made the 141-pound limit but doesn't show Gatti was "substantially" heavier, Court of Claims Judge Melvin Schweitzer said in awarding no damages.

HBO unofficially weighed Gatti at 160 pounds and Gamache at 145 pounds before the next night's fight.

Gamache, a former two-time world champion, was pummeled by Gatti, who knocked him out in the second round. Gamache said he suffered brain damage in the fight and was hospitalized for days.

Also: Police say Adam Willett, a former U.S. amateur heavyweight boxing champion, has been shot and critically injured during a confrontation not far from his suburban New York City home.

Willett, the U.S. amateur champion in 2006 and an alternate on the 2008 U.S. Olympic team in Beijing, was shot once in the torso in the parking lot of a shopping center during a botched robbery attempt.

Penguins' Crosby stars in final
regular-season game at Igloo

Sidney Crosby took the NHL lead with his 49th goal and became the third-youngest player in history to reach the 500-point mark, leading the host Pittsburgh Penguins to a 7-3 rout of the New York Islanders in the final regular-season game at Mellon Arena.

On a night the Penguins brought back more than 50 of their former players, coaches and executives to celebrate playing in the arena since 1967, Crosby made certain there were a few more highlights before the building known as the Igloo shuts down.

Crosby finished with four points, also assisting on goals by Alex Goligoski and Bill Guerin, giving him 103 points for the season and 502 in his five-season career. The only players younger than Crosby (22 years, 244 days) to hit the 500-point mark faster were Wayne Gretzky (21 years, 52 days) and former Penguins star Mario Lemieux (22 years, 172 days).

Crosby originally was credited with his 50th goal -- it would have been the first time in his career he reached that mark -- but the goal was reviewed after the game and given to Guerin.

Also: Wisconsin scored in the opening minutes of the first two periods and went on to rout Rochester Institute of Technology 8-1 in the Frozen Four at Detroit. The Badgers will play Boston College, a 7-1 winner over Miami of Ohio, on Saturday for the national title.

He was forced to leave coaching because of the colon cancer, and when he was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, he opted against treatment.
