Irish player gets priest’s attention
December 8, 2012 - 2:01 am
It used to be that only Santa Claus could see whether you were being naughty or nice at all times.
With people's every thought being tweeted or Facebooked or Instagrammed, you always have to be conscious of who is paying attention.
Such was the case with the lighthearted yet awkward Twitter exchange this week between Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert and Mark Gurtner, a priest at Eifert's home parish in Fort Wayne, Ind.
"Watching Sons of Anarchy finale. It's fine Victoria Secret show is recording," Eifert posted, drawing a response from Gurtner: "Don't watch that Victoria secret filth."
Eifert fired back that his interest in the fashion show featuring the hottest women on the planet in skimpy lingerie was simply informational.
"I watch it purely for the fashion and designs and nothing else...," he tweeted.
Gurtner wasn't buying it.
"uh huh. Not good to lie to a priest," he responded to complete the exchange.
Fortunately, Eifert steered clear of sharing his thoughts while he was watching the show. He might have had to move in to the confessional.
■ MEET ME AT THE LINE - When you play for one of the NBA's most popular teams, everything is magnified.
Dwight Howard's free-throw struggles always have been well-documented, but now that he plays for the Lakers, his anemic performance at the stripe is a national topic.
It's one Howard and his teammates probably would like to avoid as much as possible, but the issue has become unavoidable.
Even a team gathering to watch the movie "Lincoln" can be spun into Howard's ineptitude from 15 feet.
Steve Nash posted a picture of the screen as the team watched the film this week, and commenter after commenter on the photo took the opportunity to mock Howard.
Many were ignorant; most were unfunny. Many were both.
One young lady found a way to hurl her insult in a positive manner, though.
"Great movie!! I can make free throws with my eyes closed...tell Dwight to call me our first date will be at the free throw line," @glammajamma posted.
There's probably some sort of joke about Howard not being able to seal the deal if he had a date at the free-throw line, but we're going to let that one go.
■ CRAPPED OUT - Those who run the Sports Illustrated website take every precaution to make sure no offensive language is published.
It's an admirable endeavor that went hilariously wrong when former Louisiana Tech football coach Sonny Dykes accepted the head coaching job at California on Wednesday.
When the story was posted at sportsillustrated.cnn.com, the site's automatic filters kicked in and edited the content.
"According to reports far and near, Louisiana Tech coach Sonny ***** will take his air raid offense to Cal," the story read.
The issue has been fixed, but jimromenesko.com blogged about the situation and posted a screen capture of the original mistake.
This probably explains why the site has refused to post any stories on Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus.
