Muhammad undergoes MRI on shoulder

UCLA freshman guard Shabazz Muhammad injured his right shoulder during practice on Wednesday.

A team spokesman said Muhammad, a former Bishop Gorman High School standout and one of the nation's most sought-after recruits last spring when he chose the Bruins over Kentucky and Duke, was scheduled to undergo an MRI in the evening and will be re-evaluated today.

Muhammad has been the subject of an ongoing NCAA investigation involving alleged improper benefits he received in his recruitment from boosters of his Las Vegas-based AAU program. He has yet to be cleared by the NCAA for the upcoming season.

The school has only said that Muhammad, his family and UCLA are working with the NCAA during the process.

■ BRIGHAM YOUNG - Recurring knee problems have ended the playing career of senior forward Stephen Rogers, coach Dave Rose announced.

The 6-foot-8-inch Rogers was part of a BYU team that won a school-record 32 games in 2010-11 and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. He got off to a strong start last season, averaging 9.9 points and hitting 15 3-pointers in the first 10 games before tearing the meniscus in his right knee.

■ TENNESSEE - Forward Jeronne Maymon likely will miss the start of the season after having a "minor setback" in his recovery from offseason knee surgery.

Coach Cuonzo Martin didn't rule out Maymon for the Vols' Nov. 9 opener with Kennesaw State, but he indicated the 6-7 senior probably wouldn't be ready for the start of the season. Maymon averaged 12.7 points and ranked fifth in the Southeastern Conference with 8.1 rebounds per game last season to earn second-team all-SEC honors.

■ MURRAY STATE - The school suspended sophomore guard Zay Jackson for the 2012-13 season. Jackson averaged 4.9 points and 2.3 assists last season as the Racers won 31 games and reached the NCAA Tournament's second round, and he was expected to be a bigger contributor this season.

Jackson was suspended indefinitely last month after his arrest for striking two people with his car in a Wal-Mart parking lot following an altercation. He pleaded guilty on Oct. 12 to wanton endangerment and was to be sentenced Monday.

However, the case was delayed when the judge recused himself, then a surveillance video was released showing Jackson driving around the parking lot with one of the victims on the hood of his Chevy Monte Carlo.

■ DAYTON - Center Matt Kavanaugh was suspended for the entire season for violating the school's code of conduct.

The 6-9 senior started 33 games last season for the Flyers and finished fifth in the Atlantic 10 with 97 offensive rebounds. He averaged 9.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

The school declined to give details of his misconduct because of privacy laws.
