Navajo leader sports Redskins cap at game

Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly is a Washington Redskins supporter and not afraid to show it.

Shelly spent part of Sunday’s game between the Redskins and Arizona Cardinals sitting next to Washington owner Daniel Snyder while wearing a Redskins hat.

Native American and other groups have pressured Snyder to change the team’s name, calling it a racial slur. Some tribal groups have supported Snyder’s attempts to hold onto the name.

Prior to Sunday’s game, hundreds protesters gathered outside University of Phoenix Stadium, some protesting the team name, others who came to show support for it.

Earlier this year, Shelly and his office co-sponsored the Washington Redskins Original Americans Foundation golf tournament, an event that had other sponsors pull out after learning of its connection to the Redskins.

Shelly is serving out the last months of his term, which ends in January, after losing in a primary election in August.
