Nevada fishing report, May 19, 2016

LAKE MEAD — The Las Vegas Wash has been hit and miss. Some groups of anglers have reeled in as many as 40 fish while using shad or artificial baits. Others have not fared so well. Fishermen getting out early in the morning have found the most success. Black bass are hitting out of Calville Bay on chartreuse creature baits. The bass spawning season is almost over, and water levels are dropping. Keep an eye out for submerged rocks and those newly emerged.

LAKE MOHAVE — Trout imitations are catching striped bass near the dam. Anglers are finding good action from there to the powerlines. One fisherman reeled in a 6-pound striper while fishing near the dam. Anchovies are the bait of choice.

LAUGHLIN — Rotary Park and the community park in Bullhead City are seeing action. Striped bass still haven’t fully picked up down the river. They are visible from shore but not taking bait. Anglers fishing anchovies from a boat caught stripers near the nature center. The striper bite below Davis Dam has been slow.

LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS — The Nevada Department of Wildlife stocking plan calls for a channel catfish plant this week at Floyd Lamb, Sunset, Lorenzi and Boulder City ponds this week. Baits such as night crawlers, mealworms, hot dogs and chicken gizzards usually work well for the catfish. Trout continue to bite, but, with temperatures predicted to rise, the trout bite will start falling off. Bluegill and bass are starting to take worms and lures in most of the ponds.

KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA — The trout bite has been good this past week, with anglers taking fish using a variety of baits and lures in reservoirs. We have received no reports on bass or crappie, but these fish should start biting soon as water temperatures rise.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR — Action has been good this past week for rainbow trout. Most of the fish are averaging between 9 and 11 inches in length, but a few bigger fish also are being caught. Anglers have been doing well using orange or rainbow sparkle PowerBait. Those throwing small Rapala lures also have done well. The bass bite has started. Anglers are encouraged to practice catch-and-release fishing for bass until the end of June.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR — Trout have been hitting well off the dam and along the south side of the reservoir. Crappie and bass have started hitting, but the bite has been slow due to cool water temperatures.
