Oklahoma QB hurts left hand
December 1, 2008 - 10:00 pm
Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford tore ligaments in his nonthrowing hand during the Sooners' win against Oklahoma State and is expected to have surgery following the Big 12 championship game.
Sooners coach Bob Stoops said Bradford was hurt on the third series of the game but played with the injury the rest of the game. He threw for 370 yards and four touchdowns and also ran for a score.
Bradford leads the nation with 46 touchdown passes this season, and he added to his long line of school records by passing 2003 Heisman Trophy winner Jason White's career touchdown mark and 2000 Heisman runner-up Josh White's season passing mark on Saturday.
Stoops expects Bradford to play with a soft cast on his left hand in the championship game against No. 19 Missouri on Saturday.
• TENNESSEE -- Lane Kiffin will become the school's next coach, two days after Phillip Fulmer's 17-year tenure ended with a victorious send-off.
Kiffin, the former Oakland Raiders coach, will be introduced at a news conference today.
"We have had unbelievable interest from great coaches," athletic director Mike Hamilton said. "When it was all said and done, we felt like Lane Kiffin was a perfect fit for Tennessee. He's energetic, charismatic, consumed with recruiting and has had a lifelong love affair with football."
Kiffin, 33, replaces Phillip Fulmer, who was forced out after 17 seasons as Volunteers coach. Fulmer won a national championship in 1998 and two Southeastern Conference titles but had two losing seasons in the last five years, including a 5-7 mark this year.
Kiffin was the youngest coach in the NFL's modern history when hired to lead the Raiders in January 2007 at age 31 after spending two seasons as Southern California's recruiting and offensive coordinator.
The former Fresno State backup quarterback had a rocky relationship with Oakland owner Al Davis, who fired him Sept. 30 for what he said was insubordination after Kiffin went 5-15 with the Raiders.
• FLORIDA -- The Gators could be without two defensive linemen against top-ranked Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship game Saturday.
Matt Patchan has a torn medial collateral ligament in his left knee, and the freshman won't play again this season. Defensive tackle Brandon Antwine sprained a knee in the second half Saturday at Florida State, and coach Urban Meyer said Antwine is "probably doubtful" against the Crimson Tide.
• VIRGINIA -- For the second time in three years, Virginia declined to add a year to coach Al Groh's contract under a rollover clause.
"Coach Groh has three years remaining on his current contract," athletic director Craig Littlepage said, noting he and Groh would meet to review the season within the next 48 hours.
The Cavaliers (5-7) finished the season Saturday, losing 17-14 at Virginia Tech in a game they needed to be eligible for bowl consideration.
• WYOMING -- Dave Christensen, veteran offensive coordinator at Missouri, will be announced as the new head coach at Wyoming, probably today.
Missouri athletic director Mike Alden confirmed to The Kansas City (Mo.) Star that Christensen accepted the Wyoming job.
