Roll the video: Javier Baez homers in major league debut

During this year’s Big League Weekend at Cashman Field, I met the brother of Javier Baez, one of the Chicago Cubs’ hottest prospects. We happened to be sitting next to each other in the seats behind home plate; Darwin Barney’s mother and grandmother, who owns a flower shop in Las Vegas, were sitting behind us.

Javier Baez was wearing No. 70. He had a couple of hits, as I recall. His brother got them both on video. We struck up a conversation; he said he and Javier were living together in Miami now, after being born in Puerto Rico. After the game, they would watch the homemade videos of Javier back in the hotel.

After Javier Baez got pulled from the game, girls dressed in halter tops paraded up and down the aisles behind home plate. I noticed that Javier’s brother had kept his video camera rolling. I’ll bet he and Javier enjoyed those videos more than the ones of Javier getting a scratch single against the Mets.

On Tuesday night, Javier Baez was wearing No. 9. In his major league debut, he hit a ball over the fence in the 12th inning and into the trees at Coors Field giving Chicago a 6-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

I’ll bet his brother was there to get it all on video.
