Former Lady Rebels coach cuts down the nets
I’m not exactly sure what the Women’s Basketball Inviational is, only that Regina Miller and Illinois-Chicago won it, and that seems like a very good thing indeed for the former Lady Rebels coach.
UIC defeated Stephen F. Austin 73-64 in the WBI championship game Saturday in Chicago, capping a 26-win season.
UIC had never had a 20-win season until this year, Miller’s third as head coach. UIC finished 26-9 during the best season in the program’s history.
The WBI is operated by Sports Tours International. This was the fifth WIB, which is open to teams that do not qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Past winners were Appalachian State, UAB, Minnesota and Detroit.
It was the second time a Miller-coached team had appeared in a postseason title game; she led UNLV to the 2004 WNIT final, where the Lady Rebels lost at Creighton.
UIC won 11 straight games from Nov. 15 through Jan. 3, tying the longest win streak in program history. The Flames broke program records for points scored (2,598), scoring average (74.2 points per game), field goals made (940), rebounds (1,503), free throws made (557) and assists (526).
