Timely hits lift Silverado to win
April 12, 2008 - 9:00 pm
Silverado's softball team managed only eight hits Friday at Foothill.
But six came with two outs and led to five runs as the Skyhawks beat the Falcons 10-2 for Foothill's first Southeast Division loss.
"That's part of the whole atmosphere here," Silverado coach Victor Pierro said. "That toughness, that never-give-up attitude. I've been trying to preach that for years; it's finally taken hold."
Silverado scored six runs in the first inning, capped by Sam Velasco's RBI double. The Skyhawks benefited from three Foothill errors in the inning but also had three hits.
More important, Pierro said, was pitcher Katie Devlin's effort after the second inning.
After building big leads, Silverado (14-2, 6-1 Southeast Division) has struggled to keep opponents down, often allowing two or three runs and losing momentum.
On Friday, Devlin allowed one run in the second inning and no more until the top of the seventh, at one point retiring 12 of 15 batters.
"To me, the most important thing is shutting them down in the next inning," Pierro said. "We've had a real problem with that this year. Now, we constantly talk to (Devlin) and (catcher Mikayla Thielges), that this next inning, we need to stop them."
With the Falcons (15-17, 7-1) at bay, the Skyhawks scored two runs in the second inning and one in the third and sixth innings, respectively.
Taylor Lampela finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Emily Galante 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Silverado.
"When you look at the stats, our best girl has 12 RBIs" for the season, Pierro said. "It's not like it's one person standing out in every game."
