Title shot in boys soccer awaits Green Valley Gators
Green Valley senior Bryan Baugh remembers the pain of losing last season's Sunrise Region final to Eldorado and said the Gators used that defeat as motivation for the 2012 season.
On Wednesday at Heritage Park, Baugh did more than his share to make sure Green Valley would return to the title game.
Baugh had a goal and two assists as the Gators downed Las Vegas 3-0 in a Sunrise semifinal.
Green Valley (12-4-3) will face Eldorado (15-3-1) in the final at 2 p.m. Saturday.
"It's a great feeling going back to the regional final," said Baugh, whose team dropped a 2-1 decision to Eldorado in 2011. "We have had a bad taste in our mouth about that loss the entire offseason. All we thought about was getting redemption, and now we have a chance."
Baugh assisted on Daniel Valdez's goal that put the Gators up 1-0 18 minutes into the match.
Eight minutes later, Baugh made a throw-in toward the goal, and the ball bounced off of Las Vegas goalie Enrique Adame's fingers and into the net.
"That's a set play that we do," Green Valley coach Jacob Rivera said. "I think Bryan has scored four goals off that play. I think we were much more disciplined today, which made the difference."
Baugh's 20-yard pass set up Gitai Gazala for Green Valley's final score.
Victor Marquez stopped six shots to shut out the Wildcats (12-3-2).
■ Eldorado 3, Coronado 2 - Andres Lua scored all of the Sundevils' goals, including the game winner with 13 minutes left, as Eldorado reached the final.
Lua scored twice in a three-minute span in the first half, and the Sundevils seemed in control.
But after having just three shots on goal in the opening half, Coronado (8-7-4) came to life early in the second, as Chase Rinehart scored six minutes into the half. The Cougars tied the game on Justin Lyons' goal in the 55th minute.
But Lua raced past the Coronado defense and made a shot from a sharp angle for the winner.
SUNSET REGION
■ Bishop Gorman 3, Palo Verde 2 - Shawn Slattery beat two defenders on the right side and buried a low shot just inside the left post seven minutes into overtime to lift the Gaels over the Panthers.
Gorman (11-2-2) will meet Durango (13-3-3) for the Sunset title at 2 p.m. Saturday.
"It's a kid who has been on junior varsity for three years and thinks he should be on varsity, and he probably should have been last year," Gorman coach Doug Borgel said. "He never complains. He's the hardest worker. He takes advantage of his chances. He's got great individual skills."
The Gaels let a 2-0 lead slip away in the final four minutes of regulation.
Kyler Obata scored on a penalty kick in the 77th minute, and the Panthers (11-2-6) tied it in the closing seconds of regulation on a header by Mitchell Scott.
Austin Moore and Blake Balelo scored in the first half for Gorman.
■ Durango 2, Sierra Vista 1 - The Trailblazers did their scoring in a four-minute span in the second half and clinched their first region final appearance since 2000.
Durango trailed 1-0 before getting on the scoreboard in the 65th minute when Raul Pacheco was in front to redirect Cristoval Magana's throw-in from the left side.
Three minutes later, Paris Estrada's shot deflected in off the Sierra Vista goalkeeper.
"We didn't have possession of the ball at all in the first half," Durango coach Harold Nichols said. "We decided to play more on the flanks in the second half, and it paid off."
Max Vintilov scored in the first half for Sierra Vista (7-8-3).
DIVISION I-A SOUTHERN REGION
■ Clark 1, Western 0 - Victory Alvarez laced a left-footed shot into the right corner of the goal 11 minutes into overtime to give the Chargers (13-5-1) the win over the Warriors (13-2-4) in the Division I-A Southern Region semifinals.
Clark will play Tech (20-0) in the championship match at 2 p.m. Saturday.
"It's very exciting," Alvarez said. "We were waiting for this goal. They beat us twice in the regular season. This is redemption. We've been working toward this."
The Chargers, who lost twice to the Warriors during the regular season, overcame several missed scoring opportunities.
In the final minute of regulation, Vincent Moreau-Alarie's strike from near midfield forced Warriors goalkeeper Reynaldo Velazquez to back up to the goal line before making a leaping save.
Two other late shots hit the crossbar for the Chargers.
"We just had to keep on fighting," Alvarez said. "We couldn't get scared. We had to keep on getting touches until our goal came. We didn't feel pressure; we just didn't know when it would happen."
■ Tech 5, Boulder City 0 - Five players scored as the Roadrunners raced past the Eagles (9-8-1).
Rafael Munoz, Salvador Garcia, Derian Salcido and Julio Vargas each had a goal and an assist, and Juan Palacios also scored for Tech.
Christian Mojarro made two saves to get the shutout.
"We've gotten to the playoffs numerous times, but this will be our first final appearance," Tech coach Josh Jones said. "The guys are pretty pumped about that. And we definitely want to keep our undefeated season on the line."
