Tony Sanchez still deciding on UNLV quarterback spot

UNLV had its 14th of 29 practices in fall camp Wednesday morning at Rebel Park.

With the Sept. 1 season opener against Jackson State coming up two weeks from Thursday, Rebels coach Tony Sanchez said his main concerns are picking a starting quarterback between juniors Johnny Stanton and Kurt Palandech and making sure the team is fresh for its first game.

TONY’S TAKE: “The biggest thing right now is obviously, again, really pushing that quarterback spot and figure that thing out. We’re getting close on there.

“I like where we’re at right now but we’ve got to make sure that our guys have legs. We’ve got to do a really good job of evaluating where we are and making sure we’re fresh for kickoff. Sometimes you can continue to push, push, push and you’ve got guys that work hard, but then they’re tired going into Week 1.

“So we’ve got to do a good job figuring out over these next bunch of practices what we need to do to continue to install the things we need to do to stay sharp but also get these guys fresh so they’re playing fast on that Thursday night.”

NOTES: An Atlanta Falcons scout attended Wednesday’s practice.

* UNLV will have its fourth and final day of two-a-day practices Thursday before holding an intrasquad scrimmage open to the public at 8:10 a.m. Friday at Rebel Park.
