Utes top BYU in overtime

SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah center Luke Nevill scored a career-high 32 points to lead the Utes to a 94-88 overtime victory over rival Brigham Young on Tuesday night.

Luka Drca added 18 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for Utah (13-7, 4-2 Mountain West).

Both teams had a chance to win in the final seconds of regulation, but Drca missed a runner with about five seconds left, and BYU's Jonathan Tavernari missed a last-second 3-pointer after the Cougars raced the rebound upcourt.

The Utes scored seven straight points midway through overtime, but needed to outlast a flurry of Cougars baskets that kept it close.

Lee Cummard led BYU (16-4, 3-3) with 23 points, while Jimmer Fredette added 19 points and 10 assists. Tavernari finished with 16 points.

The Cougars led most of the way until the game turned into a back-and-forth struggle. Utah outscored BYU 23-17 in overtime. In all, there were 10 ties and 10 lead changes.

"We had some good plays and good leads, but neither team could keep the lead," BYU coach Dave Rose said.

The game was the first overtime matchup between the teams since 1991, when BYU won 51-49 in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The Utes' win Tuesday ended a four-game losing streak against their biggest rival.

• Wyoming 72, Air Force 59 -- At Laramie, Wyo., Tyson Johnson scored 18 points and Brandon Ewing 17 as the Cowboys (14-6, 3-3 MWC) turned back the Falcons (9-10, 0-6).

Afam Muojeke added 16 points for Wyoming, which raised its home record to 10-0.

Andrew Henke had 18 points to lead Air Force, which has lost seven in a row.
