Western High School cancels football season

Western High School's football season came to a premature end Friday, just hours before the Warriors were scheduled to host Southwest League rival Durango.

The school and the Clark County School District both announced Friday afternoon that Western is canceling the remainder of its football season at all levels. The Warriors (0-6, 0-5 Southwest), have forfeited Friday night's game against the Trailblazers, next week's game at top-ranked Bishop Gorman, and the season finale at Sierra Vista on Oct. 27.

Western associate principal for athletics Chris Whitney said the decision was made in "the interest of the safety and well-being of the remaining athletes on the team."

Whitney cited an on-campus incident, about which he would not elaborate, and athletes becoming ineligible as contributing factors in the decision.

"We have a very young team," Whitney said. "We were looking at moving some students around to fill some holes, and with three of our toughest opponents coming up, it just made sense to make this decision. It was a difficult decision to make."
