4th-grader brings Nerf gun to school, gets suspended

Just a few days into the school year, fourth-grader Ramsey Williams brought a favorite toy to his class’ first show-and-tell.
He was suspended for it.
The night before, the Georgia boy had been planning what to bring — an iPad or some other toys — before settling on a Nerf Reactor, a plastic gun for kids that shoots soft foam balls and is rated for ages six and up.
His father wasn’t aware which toys Ramsey planned on bringing.
Scott McDonald didn’t think anything of it, until he got a call from the school saying that his son had brought a weapon to school. When he asked what weapon, the school told him a plastic gun.
The student was given three days of in-school suspension, according to WMAZ.
“He told me he didn’t know they would think it was a weapon or he wouldn’t have brought it to school,” McDonald said.
School officials said the suspension was not about the Nerf gun itself, and said, “We never viewed that as a weapon.”
