A slice of Dodger heaven: Scully at Cashman

For a fellow who has been behind the microphone at the ballpark for as long as legendary announcer Vin Scully has, Wednesday night’s exhibition between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds had to be pretty forgettable.

The crowd of 11,896 watched a carnival of Dodger incompetence exacerbated by the strong winds. Final score: Reds 12, Dodgers 4. Starter Josh Towers gave up five straight singles to start the game and eventually surrendered nine earned runs. Just two errors in the box score masked an evening littered with misplayed fly balls and bobbled double-play grounders by Los Angeles.

Undaunted, Scully strung nine innings of pearls, complimented Las Vegas fans for their devotion on such a blustery night and took time before the game to meet one of his biggest fans, my daughter, Amelia.

At Cashman, Scully was escorted by his friends, Carol and Vinny Montalto.

Scully is recovering from a recent fall in which he suffered a head injury requiring a trip to the hospital. He laughed it off, reminding all present that his thick Irish skull was darned near indestructible.

Word continues to circulate that Scully is considering retiring, which is something baseball fans can’t imagine. I vote that the Dodgers bring Scully in as a pinch-hitter for each Sunday home game on their summer schedule. I guarantee the ratings will skyrocket. “Sunday with Vin” would be an instance classic.
