Astronaut tweets ‘saddest photo’ of Gaza from space

German astronaut Alexander Gerst tweeted two photos on Wednesday that show what the astronauts aboard the International Space Station saw as they passed over Israel and Gaza.

“My saddest photo yet,” Gerst said. “From #ISS we can actually see explosions and rockets flying over #Gaza & #Israel.”

Gerst tweeted a second photo with the same message written in German.

The conflict began weeks ago with Israeli airstrikes and rockets fired from Gaza, but escalated into an Israel ground invasion that left 630 Palestinians and 30 Israelis dead. On Thursday, Israeli tank shells hit a compound housing a U.N. school, killing at least 15 people and wounding dozens.
