B Sweet Candy Boutique is a destination for candyholics at Tivoli Village
Dust off your witch's hat. Hurry to don your ghoulish costume.
Tivoli Village, 302 S. Rampart Blvd., plans to host a safe street trick-or-treat event from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday. The streets will be filled with a festive atmosphere to include stilt walkers, balloon artists, games, candy, face painters, a photo booth, interactive game booths and food booths.
Families with costumed children 10 or younger can roam the streets of Tivoli Village. The event is one day, but candyholics can satisfy their sweet tooth any day of the year at the B Sweet Candy Boutique, 420 S. Rampart Blvd., No. 240, inside the Market LV at Tivoli Village.
The shop's shelves hold more than 60 oversized apothecary jars full of bulk candies such as Atomic Fireballs, sour balls and Mary Janes. Gummy candy is perhaps best represented, including gummy rings with hard-to-find flavors such as watermelon, raspberry and cherry.
"The watermelon are a hit. This is the second time we filled it up this week," said Arlene Bordinhão, owner/operator.
What goes well with gummy fried eggs? Bacon lollipops, of course.
Bordinhão, who owns the store with her husband, Victor, said any holiday or family event in her house warrants a candy feast, a tradition that led to opening the store.
"Our wedding, my son's baptism and our baby shower, we always had a candy buffet," she said. "It's something that we both just mutually love. And every anniversary, we always get each other some kind of huge candy bouquet."
Her position forces her to employ a technique she happily called "continuous quality control," i.e. taste testing.
Off in the corner are the specialty candies, which are made locally by Sweet Ruby Jane Confections, 8975 S. Eastern Ave. They were a last-minute addition to the business plan.
"My husband was passing by (their shop), saw it, made a U-turn and went inside," Bordinhão said. "They are these two ... sisters, and the name Sweet Ruby Jane was their grandmother. They use her recipes."
This day, Sweet Ruby Jane offerings included chocolate-covered Twinkies, chocolate-covered pretzels and honeycomb candy covered in dark or milk chocolate.
Another corner had nostalgia candy such as French Chews, Bit-O-Honey, Big Hunk, Pop Rocks, Candy Buttons, Sugar Babies and Boyer Mallo Cups. B Sweet contacts the wholesalers directly so its stock is always fresh and not from a wholesaler whose product might have been sitting in a warehouse for months.
California resident Cindy Huffman was in town for a wedding and gravitated toward the nostalgia section.
"I remember those, definitely the Abba-Zabas," she said. "It takes me back to childhood; it's just fun. That was a simpler time."
Don't see your favorite? B Sweet knows how to get it.
"We get requests for candy all the time," said Danielle Price, cashier. "They ask for licorice and things like that."
For Halloween, expect the staff to get in on the fun by dressing up in a Candy Land theme and making glitter cotton candy in pumpkin orange or ghostly green. The store has Pixy Stix to hand out to children. For those who want to adopt the store owner's tradition, candy baskets for sale will have Halloween themes and include gummy rats and a Box of Boogers. Bordinhão said more than 1,000 children were at last year's Tivoli Village trick-or-treat event.
"We're definitely getting our Pixy Stix ready," she said.
Store hours are from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
