BACKFIRE: Beers on regents?
November 11, 2008 - 9:45 am
So Bob Beers is toying with the idea of accepting an appointment to the University Board of Regents. That prospect must give great joy to those (Gov. Jim Gibbons, for instance) who would like to make Chancellor Jim Rogers disappear.
Interesting. But it smells funny to me.
Surely Beers, freshly bounced from the state Senate, can find better things to do with his time than irritate the regents. He had to be more astute politically than to look like a go-fer for the unpopular governor just after losing an election.
If Beers plans to move onward and upward, I doubt spending time with the regents is the best path.
Frankly, this looks more like a political prank than an attempt to forward higher education in the state.
And it has every possibility of backfiring. Not on Rogers, who needs the assignment like a root canal, but on Beers, who dreams of higher office.
If Beers is perceived as a guy who can’t wait to get in and start wrenching the process, he may forever be branded as more of a malcontent than a serious political thinker.
